Abraham Lincoln's "The Gettysburg Address" and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" are two of the greatest speeches ever. Both of these speakers use similar rhetorical devices, tone, and emphasis. Both speakers use allusions in their speeches. Lincoln's first line is an allusion to the founding fathers fight, "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." MLK's first line is an allusion to Lincoln's speech, "Five score years ago, a great American. signed the Emancipation Proclamation." Both of the speakers also used repetition in their speeches. Both speakers repeated the words "we" and "nation" many times in their speeches. This was to remind the audience of what they were fighting for, a nation that is free for all men, no matter what race or color. Lincoln uses parallel structure in his speech, like the line, "We cannot dedicate, we cannot cons ecrate, we cannot hallow this ground." MLK uses a refrain in his speech. In his speech, the phrase, "I have a dream" is the refrain. Lincoln uses a fast pace in his speech, while MLK uses a more moderate pace. MLK uses a somber tone for the first half of his speech, while the second half has a more light-hearted and hopeful tone. Lincoln uses a serious tone throughout his speech, to remind the audience of the serious and sad business that is war.
